We all know the important place that a mother occupies in the heart of the king; in the same way we see the attention that this king can give to the supplicating voice of that woman who gave him birth. Thus it happens in the relationship of Jesus, King of kings, with His Most Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary, whom we consider Queen of Heaven and Earth.
In the Hebrew tradition the mother of the king is considered queen, but for us, beyond the tradition, we have Mary as Queen because Jesus is our King and Lord. He is the One who has redeemed us and She has fulfilled a fundamental role in the plan of salvation.
The Immaculate Virgin, preserved immune from every stain of original guilt, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory and was exalted by the Lord as universal Queen so that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, Lord of lords (cf. Rev 19:16) and conqueror of sin and death. (Second Vatican Council, Lumen gentium, n.59).
Therefore, Pope Pius XII, summarizing the whole tradition of the previous centuries, wrote with great devotion: “Because the Virgin Mary was exalted to be the Mother of the King of kings, with good reason the Church honors her with the title of Queen.” (Ad Caeli Reginam, n.32).
The encounter with God the Trinity, the ultimate end of man, full happiness without threats, will come with Jesus and His reign, and this with the Queenship of Mary, according to Saint Louis Mary Grignion de Montfort: “Through the Most Blessed Virgin Jesus Christ came into the world and through Her He must also reign in the world” (TD 1). And elsewhere the saint says: “If the knowledge and reign of Jesus Christ are to spread throughout the world, as certainly will happen, this will come about as a necessary consequence of the knowledge and reign of the Most Blessed Virgin, who brought Him into the world the first time and will make Him shine forth the second time.” (TD 13). Finally: “May the Queenship of Mary come to us, so that, Lord, Your reign may come.” (TD 217).
The Queenship of Mary is the reign of Her Immaculate Heart, according to the apparitions of the Virgin at Fatima, with the final victory announced by the Mother of God: “My Immaculate Heart will triumph” (July 13, 1917). The triumph of the reign of Jesus (cf. Jn 16:33; 1 Cor 15:57) comes to us through devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, manifested at Fatima and which forms part of the heritage of Catholic devotion to the Virgin Mary.
